In his breakout novel, K. Murry Johnson combines two never before paired genres black gay and vampire fiction. Set in Louisiana, Image of Emeralds and Chocolate masterfully explores the past and the present. The novel speaks to all who have ever dreamed of finding romance, and captures the national obsession with vampires. The story follows Eric Peterson, a talented high school senior enrolled in a creative writing course at Loyola University. Insecure and inexperienced, he often daydreams about finding love. His fantasies quickly become reality when a strikingly attractive new student, Marquis LeBlanc, is assigned as his writing partner. But the man of Eric's dreams is hiding something. Marquis has been severely depressed for a very long time. His therapeutic motive for enrolling in a writing class is abruptly derailed when he unexpectedly falls in love for the second time in his life. If Marquis reveals his secret, will Eric accept him...or even believe him?

I have to give this book five stars because it is absolutely OUTSTANDING! K. Murray Johnson has written a superb novel that blends elements of black gays, teenage love, vampires and sex that makes for a cauldron of interesting stories. This book could have gone south when you mix dynamics of those elements. However, K. Murry Johnson blends those elements together in a sexy, quirky, engrossing, haunting, beautiful and meaningful way. The book will keep you on the edge of your seat based on powerful conflicts of hidden secrets and agenda's that should captivate the reader. Also, there are Three entries of "A Slaves Tale" that written by one of the main characters that gives the reader a powerful description of the suffering of slaves and human prejudices. The "Slaves Tale add a sliver of mystery to this book that only adds to the appeal of Images of Emeralds and Chocolate. All I can say is that this is truly a wonderful book that really does have a happy ending. You will enjoy it.Product details

Image of Emeralds and Chocolate edition by K Murry Johnson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I read this book over the summer as part of a book club selection. Johnson takes you on an exciting adventure through time and frames the story of an African American vampire. The tale is set in Louisiana, to which I am native, so that added for an additional sense of familiarity. He delivers on advancing the story of Eric and Marquis to which you find out how Marquis came to be and the internal power struggle that he deals with throughout the book. I personally enjoyed the characters, how they unfolded and what was behind the next twist. At the end of the book, I was literally screaming "I NEED THE SEQUEL NOW". Johnson truly delivered and I will be first on the list to read Part II!
I really enjoyed this book! Typically, I prefer to read non-fiction books about psychology and personal development (think Malcolm Gladwell). I bought this book to switch it up a bit and I was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting a book about vampires but what it really turned out to be was a great love story. As a former band member (and awkward teen), I connected with the characters in the book and I felt things that I hadn’t felt in a long time. I also appreciate that there were several themes and settings throughout the book which helped to keep me engaged but not confused. I would highly recommend that you read this book to see for yourself. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
K. Murry Johnson has pulled off a rare gem of paranormal, black, gay fiction with a decidedly YA sensibility.
It explores difficult topics around coming out, virginity, and deciding on one's identity independent of what society wants without indulging in maudlin melodrama or hip cynicism.
With an overwhelming desire to empower its dual protagonists to move forward in their lives and towards each other.
Eric's narrative does the bulk of the storytelling heavy lifting and it is rooted the mundane issues of a smart boy trying to navigate his very separate worlds, of home, church, school, and friends, while trying to achieve his goals, while not alienating his family.
Marquis is far more idealized. His story in itself is a metaphor, but strong in its own right. Although, I am left wondering if he is polishing his apple and he isn't nearly the white hat he appears to be.
I enjoyed the book thoroughly and am looking forward to seeing where Johnson goes with the characters if he writes a follow-up.
I thoroughly enjoyed the literary work, crafted using a dual story line that kept me wanting to read more and more until the last page. The author used great imagery and sensory, traveling thru distance and time to create a beautiful love story. The emotional roller coaster was so realistic and detailed, it was hard to put the book down. Job well done. I anticipate reading more from the author soon.
but I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book.
I must confess, though, that this review comes almost two years after reading the book. -(
One review of the book said "Murry Johnson paints you a vivid picture that literally makes you visualize the story, as if you're witnessing cinematography, rather than literature." I couldn't agree more. One of the joys I recall when I discovered reading as a child was that of actually being able to visualize the scenes authors were trying to portray. This is the first book that's been able to spark this ability in me in ages.
I'm not a history buff, either, but, again, I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the way the author wove history into the story.
I think I'm due to re-read this sometime in the near future.
I chose "Exotic" as my title as a true description of it's meaning -strikingly, excitingly, or mysteriously different or unusual!! I rarely write book reviews, but Image of Emeralds and Chocolate had me under it's spell the first chapter and never let go. A friend recommended it and I quickly thanked him for introducing K. Murray Johnson to my list of intriguing authors. I started by reading it at the gym while walking on the treadmill instead of watching the fast food commercials interrupting my favorite shows. The first day, I was confused when my treadmill stopped. I thought for sure that it was broken, but it hadn't. An entire hour had passed and I was drenched in sweat from my workout. It felt like only a few minutes. I told myself that I will only read while at working out and found myself on my most tired days, heading to the gym and hitting the treadmill and elliptical machine just so I could read.. I cared about what happened to the characters and knew early what the ending would be, but like many trips in life; it's not the destination, but the trip there. Every twist and new revelation caused tears, laughter, sadness, and dare say blushing.
I have to give this book five stars because it is absolutely OUTSTANDING! K. Murray Johnson has written a superb novel that blends elements of black gays, teenage love, vampires and sex that makes for a cauldron of interesting stories. This book could have gone south when you mix dynamics of those elements. However, K.
